Dr Terry Walker, the man who oversaw the transition of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC) to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) passed away in Queensland earlier this week.
Dr Walker was Director and CEO of the AAEC from 1983 to 1987, and then Executive Director of ANSTO from 1987 to 1988. Dr Walker is remembered as a well-liked manager who helped the organisation achieve some significant milestones during turbulent times.
Dr Walker was also a distinguished scientist in his own right, sharing the 1964 Syme Prize for 'the most distinguished scientific research carried out in Australia in the preceding two years' for his work into beryllium and its ores.
He was also Chief of the AAEC’s Materials Division for many years and served as Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC from 1973 to 1977.
ANSTO acknowledges the significant contribution Dr Walker made to the organisation and extends condolences to his family at this sad time
