It's Dr Karl vs Dr Who

This weekend in Adelaide we will find out whether South Australians are watching too much Dr Who and too little Dr Karl.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) will be bringing its popular Fact or Fiction show to the annual Science Alive! event this weekend.

Now in its 8th year, Science Alive! is the premier event of National Science Week in SA, bringing together a variety of organisations offering a huge range of interactive experiences.

During ANSTO’s Fact or Fiction show, audiences watch clips from popular films and vote on whether the technology featured is actual science fact or pure science fiction.

ANSTO, Education and Discovery Centre Team Leader, Rod Dowler, said the team was thrilled to be bringing Fact or Fiction to Adelaide audiences, and can’t wait to see the results.

“ANSTO’s Fact or Fiction show is highly entertaining and educational, using pop-culture to interest kids and adults alike in science,” Mr Dowler said.

“Around 20,000 people are expected to attend Science Alive! over the weekend, so it’s a great opportunity for us to help spread the word on the importance of science.”

Science areas explored include everything from Teleporting to Time Travel, Invisibility, Immortality, Light Sabres, Intelligent Metals, Terraforming Climates and Telekinesis.

“How can you clear the cosmic haze and determine what’s fact or fiction? By attending Science Alive! this weekend,” Mr Dowler said.

“We’ll have a big screen experience where the world of popular sci-fi film collides with cutting edge science.”

Science Alive! will be held in the Goyder Pavilion at the Adelaide Showgrounds on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August from 10am - 4pm. It is suitable for people aged 8 and up.

There will be a variety of fun and engaging shows each day during Science Alive! including curiosity shows, chemistry shows and native animals shows.

Workshops throughout the day include the Stardome Astronomy, a robotics workshop, tours of solar panels, a Plaster Fun House and Zigzag Circus, and a free circus skills workshop.
