ANSTO is running fun and educational science programs these school holidays.
The workshops and lessons will run at the ANSTO campus at Lucas Heights from 9 to 25 January 2012.
Aimed at kids aged 8 and over from the Sydney, Sutherland and Illawarra areas, the programs feature some of Australia’s most advanced scientific tools, including our only nuclear reactor.
The school holiday line up include
- Free “up and atom school tours” that run twice a day from 9 - 25 January and provide a behind-the-scenes look at Australia’s best science campus; and
- $10 workshops on how to turn a coke bottle into a rocket: unique 90 minute lessons on “coke bottle aerodynamics” that will run on January 12, 13, 19 and 20.
“These two programs are designed to show kids that science can be fun,” said the Head of ANSTO’s discovery centre, Rod Dowler.
“Many kids wouldn’t know an interest in rockets is actually an interest in physics, engineering and chemistry - and these lessons and tours will help demonstrate that.
“What we are doing here is working to build an interest in science that hopefully will last with these kids throughout their lives.
“There are numerous great career paths – including at places like ANSTO which alone hires around 1,200 people – for kids who develop a scientific interest.”
The lessons and tours will be fully supervised by qualified scientists and ANSTO education officers.
