Six scientists from ANSTO will meet with the nation’s decision makers and have the opportunity to present their important work into areas as diverse as climate change, agriculture, renewable and low carbon energy alternatives, obesity and human nutrition.
It’s all part of Science meets Parliament, the event that brings up to 200 scientists from all over Australia for meetings and forums with parliamentarians. Science meets Parliament was established in 1999 to give scientists opportunities to witness decision-making first hand, and to inform this process on important scientific issues.
The aim of the event is to stimulate and inform Parliament's discussion of scientific issues that underpin the economic, social and environmental well-being of the nation. A by-product of this is that it provides scientists with unique professional development opportunities to get a clear sense of the competing rationalities of science, politics and public policy. It also provides politicians with an opportunity to meet and hear from some of the nation’s brightest minds across a wide range of scientific disciplines.
ANSTO is an enthusiastic participant in this annual event, and is sponsoring the address at the National Press Club by Australia’s new Chief Scientist, Professor Ian Chubb on Tuesday, 21 June. To be broadcast live on ABC television, the address will be introduced by ANSTO’s Distinguished Research Fellow, Professor Richard Banati.
