Safety comes first at ANSTO

Contrary to reports in today’s Daily Telegraph, staff and community safety continue to come first at ANSTO. Safety is not being compromised due to staffing changes being implemented at its nuclear research reactor.

The HIFAR reactor is operated by trained and experienced staff, supported by a wide range of well-proven safety systems. These staff are trained in radiation protection and in managing the activities conducted within the reactor. They are supported by health physics technicians who provide regular routine radiation surveys, as well as monitoring for specific operations.

As we will no longer be doing any of these specific operations on night shift, we no longer need health physics staff at night. Routine surveys will continue.

Radiation detection and monitoring systems are also unchanged. The emergency response system that is in place to respond to unusual situation remains in place and an on call arrangement exists to provide health physics support outside normal hours.

In addition, health-physics trained safety officers and an experienced reactor engineer are on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week in case of any incidents.

The NSW Fire Brigade has informed ANSTO that it will respond to incidents at HIFAR as it normally would. ANSTO will work with the Fire Brigade to address concerns expressed by the Fire Brigade union.

The relevant regulator, ARPANSA, is satisfied that the changed coverage continues to meet necessary safety standards. ANSTO management has discussed the changed coverage with ANSTO unions and affected staff prior it taking place.
