ANSTO will host a routine emergency response exercise at Lucas Heights on Wednesday 7 November, 2012 from 9.30am.
Annual exercises are held at ANSTO to test and evaluate emergency plans and standard operating procedures with emergency services and other community groups.
ANSTO’s General Manager of Safety, Environment and Radiological Assurance, Hef Griffiths says, these exercises provide an opportunity to continue to improve our procedures and practice our co-operation with emergency services.
“While we have safety systems and backup systems in place to prevent incidents, holding regular exercises is about maintaining a safety culture where we are always prepared should an incident ever occur.”
ANSTO works with community organisations and local emergency services from the Sutherland Shire to prepare for a variety of possible situations.
This Friday’s exercise will involve more than 50 personnel from ANSTO and Fire and Rescue NSW as well as observers from other relevant NSW and federal agencies.
A number of emergency vehicles are also expected to be involved in the exercise, and be active on and around Lucas Heights throughout the day. Simulated smoke may also be visible during the exercise.
