The UK has a long term programme in place to safely deal with its legacy of radioactive waste. To share some of their best practises, ANSTO will be hosting a talk by Professor William Lee an expert in waste management.
To be held on Thursday 21 February at the Lucas Heights campus of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), the lecture will emphasise the UK experience of the delicate balance between the science and engineering needed and working with local communities who may be prepared to host a repository containing the waste forms.
Professor Lee's talk will describe the UK’s waste inventory, some of the technical issues associated with its treatment, packaging, storage and disposal, and progress in the volunteerism programme aimed at a final solution to their waste problem.
Professor Lee is perfectly placed to give a broad overview of this complex and delicate topic.
He is Director of the Centre for Nuclear Engineering at the Imperial College London and Deputy Chair of the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) advisory committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM).
An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) technical expert of vitrification and novel waste forms and co-author of five books and over 350 peer-reviewed publications, Professor Lee will bring his wealth of knowledge on this complex topic.
