In relation to media reports today concerning work stopping on the Pacific Highway upgrade near Laurieton, New South Wales, a spokesperson for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) said:
“Earlier today, ANSTO confirmed that official records show the material was not coming from Lucas Heights, going to Lucas Heights, made in Lucas Heights or using vehicles from Lucas Heights,” the spokesperson said.
“ANSTO has said it will assist in investigations at the Pacific Highway site if requested by the relevant NSW Government Agencies including NSW Roads and Maritime Services, the NSW Environment Protection Agency or Fire and Rescue NSW.
“ANSTO can now confirm that tomorrow morning it will deploy three experts in radiation protection to Laurieton, to independently assist investigations being undertaken at the site by NSW Government agencies.
“While all indications are that ANSTO had no involvement in the accident that took place back in 1980, as the home of Australia’s nuclear expertise we have experts available and on hand that will be assisting with the investigation at the site.
“While the NSW Environment Protection Authority has already confirmed today that there are no indications of drums or canisters on site, we agree that a site investigation is a sensible precautionary measure - and ANSTO is happy to provide assistance and expertise.”
