ANSTO Scoops International Business Award for Export of Services

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), working together with the University of NSW Water Research Laboratory (WRL), has scooped the prestigious Hong Kong Australia Business Association and HSBC NSW Business Award 2000 in the category of "Export of Services" for work studying effluent outfalls in the Hong Kong Harbour.


The Award, accepted on behalf of the team by ANSTO Executive Director Professor Helen Garnett, was presented by the Hon. Michael Egan, NSW Treasurer, Minister for State Development and Vice President of the Executive Counci,l and by Mr Michael Sze, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, in front of an audience of more than 350 people.


In backgrounding the Award, Professor Garnett explained that ANSTO, in conjunction with WRL, was awarded contracts for the project following open tender for the evaluation of the environmental impact of three off-shore sewage outfalls and the effectiveness of the large Tolo Effluent Export Scheme in Hong Kong.
 

The strategy for investigating the sewage outfalls involved the development of numerical models of the fate and behaviour of the effluent and the evaluation of the models using radiotracer techniques.
