Lucas Heights hosts international environmental science conference

Scientists from around the world are expected to attend the bi-annual SPERA 2002  Environmental Radioactivity Conference to be held in the AINSE Theatre at the Lucas Heights Science and Technology Centre between 13 and 17 May 2002.

The conference, which is recognised as one of the most important environmental conferences in the South Pacific Region dealing with environmental radioactivity, is jointly supported by ANSTO, Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering, National Radiation Laboratory New Zealand and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

A number of important workshops will be held during the conference covering methods and case studies in monitoring and sampling of radioactivity in the environment and problems relating to measurement of radionuclides, limits of detection and remote sampling methods.

In previous years the conference has been held in Papeete; Dunedin; Canberra; Darwin; Christchurch and Noumea with scientific outcomes being reported in many journals around the globe.

Delegates this year will come from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Fiji, France, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan, the UK and the USA making it a conference of international significance.

The conference will bring together people working in geographically remote laboratories around the South Pacific to share their skills and knowledge. Science writers are invited to attend this important conference.
