First polarised neutrons on Quokka

Today, for the first time, we used polarised neutrons on our QUOKKA small-angle scattering neutron instrument.

This makes QUOKKA the second polarised-neutron instrument at OPAL, following the successful test on our PLATYPUS neutron reflectometer on 21 October 2009.

The graphs on the left show the signals with "flipper-on" and "flipper-off", while those on the right show the actual images on the two-dimensional detector.

Experiments using a real sample are due to take place next week.
