A/Prof Jesmond Sammut of the UNSW was at ANSTO on 11 May 2015 to deliver a presentation at the Institute for Environmental to Research (IER) on aquaculture projects that affect food and income security in developing countries.

One of the current projects, a collaboration between UNSW, ANSTO and agencies in Papua New Guinea (PNG), addresses the high cost of fish feed and other production bottlenecks for environment friendly inland fish farming in PNG.
The projects are funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Debashish Mazumder is a collaborating scientist on the project who is determining the dietary pathways of natural and formulated feeds through analyses of the carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of fish and dietary sources.
A/Prof Sammut was accompanied by members of his research team, who work in PNG and Australia on finding strategies to manage environmental constraints, technology deficiencies, poor planning, disease outbreaks and the increasing cost of production.
