Outstanding young scientists visit ANSTO

Tim Cashman, a year 12 student at St Patrick's College Sutherland represented Australia at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Washington DC, USA earlier this year.

He did exceptionally well, returning with a bronze medal. ANSTO is a proud backer of selected members of the Australian Science Olympiad team.

As well as being an outstanding athlete, achieving representative honours in both AFL and athletics, Tim has set his sights on a university degree involving studies in chemistry after achieving great results both at school and in national competitions.

ANSTO staff were also so impressed by the work of Iggy Fox, the winner of the Sleek Geeks Science Prize, that his family was also invited for a special tour of the Lucas Heights facility.

A year 5 student from Oyster Bay Public School, Iggy won a national competition as part of Science Week with a video about how diet affects the size of eggs.

By putting his hens on a high protein diet they were able to produce eggs as large as 119 grams, compared to 70 gram eggs produced commercially.

His great video won a $2000 prize and a $500 book voucher.

Iggy was taken on a special tour of the site with his family.
