The ARC-funded project to install a beryllium-filter (secondary-spectrometer) option on our Taipan thermal 3-axis spectrometer is nearing completion, and it will be integrated into Taipan in the period 6 June - 12 September 2014.
During the same outage, the shielding wall between Taipan and the adjacent Sika cold 3-axis spectrometer will be moved and extra dance-floor panels installed, in order to increase the Q-range available on TAIPAN.
In other words, Taipan will be taken out of service for two full reactor cycles, as shown in the online schedule. As a consequence, the number of days available to users on Taipan in the second half of 2014 will be significantly reduced.
We are hoping to have Sika operating well enough, and with its operational licence from ARPANSA, by then so that it will be able to absorb some of the demand for beam time.
