An educational and entertaining activity for curious kids this summer are the free “Up and Atom” science tours of Australia’s only research reactor.
The tour offers a unique experience for visitors who get to see deep inside the OPAL research reactor through live CCTV. Visitors will also get a first hand look at a vast array of some of the world’s best scientific equipment including neutron beam instruments that help scientists solve some of society’s biggest problems like climate change.
Suitable for budding scientists aged 8 to 88, the Up and Atom tour is designed to provide an understanding of the benefits of nuclear science. This includes cutting-edge research into food structures which could one day see the production of smart packaging that can tell you how fresh and nutritious particular foods are.
So make ANSTO a ‘must see’ during these school holidays. You’ll learn more about the production of life-saving medicines and how nuclear science is driving breakthroughs in a wide range of areas from nanotechnology to renewable energy.
