Neutron diffraction lost one of its pioneers on July 19 with the passing of Hugo Rietveld.
Hugo is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Rietveld Method for refinement against a (neutron) powder diffraction pattern of the crystal structure and the parameters describing the peak profiles and positions simultaneously, but he also has a strong earlier connection to Lucas Heights.
As part of his PhD project at the University of Western Australia, Hugo was involved in the first single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments on the HIFAR reactor, co-authoring the first paper from HIFAR using this technique in no less a prestigious journal as Nature.
We extend our sincere condolences to Hugo’s family, friends, and the innumerable benefactors of his pioneering work.
An extensive obituary by Alan Hewat, Bill David, and Lambert van Eijck may be found here.
