ARC Linkage Grant Success

Congratulations to Chris Garvey who is a partner investigator on a successful ARC Linkage grant "Advanced cryobanking for recalcitrant-seeded Australian rainforest plants” that was announced today by the ARC.

In the successful ARC Linkage application, researchers from Curtin University of Technology, RMIT University, The University of Western Australia, ANSTO and the University of South Dakota build on previous work in cryo- and anhydro- biology and the molecular mechanisms by which organisms maintain their ability to reproduce. Small angle neutron scattering, neutron diffraction and synchrotron x-ray scattering have formed an important part of this research direction. Joined by researchers at the Botanic Gardens Perth and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney this project should provide fundamental knowledge to target major impediments to cryostorage of recalcitrant-seeded native species and the desiccation sensitivity of  materials for the propagation of endangered Australian rainforest species. This knowledge will enable conservation agencies to greatly enhance their ability to preserve the unique Australian rainforest flora. The successful proposal is an interdisciplinary research alliance which will have the ability to enhance the efficiency of ecological restoration for recalcitrant Australian rainforest plant species.

Wollemi Pine

The Wollemi Pine is one of the plants that will be examined in this study.
