The world of nuclear science has got a burst of energy, with 14 promising young people starting a two year graduate program at ANSTO.

ANSTO is Australia’s home of nuclear science and expertise, including our only nuclear reactor that enables state-of-the-art environmental, medical and minerals research.
The young men and women have defied trends of graduates moving away from science and maths, and embraced the fields that emphasise innovation and are key to Australia’s future economy.
While some studies show a 20 year decline in Year 12 maths and science participation*, ANSTO’s new recruits are leading the way back to science and working with cutting edge technologies.
Jessica Haines of ANSTO’s Early Career and Talent Development Team said the ANSTO Graduate Development Program is an excellent start to a rewarding and exciting career in nuclear science.
“The ANSTO Graduate Development Program is a wonderful foundation for graduates to get hands-on experience and mentoring in their specialist area of study, as well as opportunities to develop professional skills,” Ms Haines said.
The successful graduates have a variety of qualifications in fields including Engineering, Science, Business, Mathematics and Biology.
The ANSTO graduate program was recently named as one of GradAustralia’s Top 100 Employers for 2015. This program recognises companies with exceptional graduate programs.
After only a two week induction program the graduates have already had incredible opportunities to meet with a diverse group of people who work within ANSTO and externally.
That includes Mr Craig Kelly MP, Member for Hughes, who recently congratulated the successful graduates, who competed against over 1000 applicants from across the country.
“We’ve already had a lot of training opportunities over the past two weeks, and then to meet and network with a Member of Parliament was really exciting,” ANSTO graduate Andrew Barley said.
Throughout the two year ANSTO program, the graduates will move through structured, tailored rotations that will give them access to a range of career experiences.
“The program provides in-depth training and development for individuals interested in all areas of our organisation. It is a great learning opportunity,” Ms Haines said.
In order to gain experience across ANSTO’s various and varied operations, they will work in disciplines including Environmental Research, Engineering, ANSTO Health, and Nuclear Business.
