ANSTO's expertise was recently called upon when chemist Mr Ned Blagojevic was voted onto the Board of the Australian X-ray Analysis Association (AXAA) as its National Secretary, offering an independent voice in the unique and specialised field of industrial x-ray analysis. It is the first time an ANSTO representative has been selected for the Board.
Mr Blagojevic explained that the role gives ANSTO an excellent opportunity to connect with people in the industry and, in addition, offer information and advice about an alternative materials analysis technique, neutron scattering.
“ANSTO is in a unique position when it comes to materials analysis,” said Mr Blagojevic. “We not only have experts in x-ray analysis and related techniques, but have the only Australian facility that conducts neutron diffraction and scattering. This means we offer additional analytical alternatives for scientists.
“AXAA members comprise people mainly engaged in industrial x-ray analysis and because ANSTO can offer the additional neutron scattering expertise I see this as a benefit to all members.
“I also see my appointment as being of benefit to ANSTO as it offers a great opportunity for our work to become better known throughout this industry and for people to work together to improve methods of analysis,” said Mr Blagojevic.
ANSTO’s Bragg Institute scientists, who conduct neutron scattering, were well represented at the AXAA 2005 conference in Fremantle when Mr Blagojevic was voted in.
Mr Blagojevic’s own expertise and experience includes applications of nuclear spectroscopy in environmental monitoring, radiopharmaceutical production and biomedical physics in clinical research. He has over 50 publications, many of which have resulted from productive collaborations with external organisations.
His current ANSTO position is a Senior Researcher involved in developing mineral and waste characterisation techniques using x-ray and synchrotron X-ray techniques.
