Dear Sir
Jim Green ("Letters", 17 October), by referring to historical events, attempts to create the impression that security is wanting at the Lucas Heights Science and Technology Centre. This is far from the truth.
Yes, a suspicious package was found in a substation in the Lucas Heights area in the early 1980s. It was a substation belonging to the then Sydney County Council, located on land they leased and not subject to any security arrangements. It had nothing to do with the reactor.
ANSTO has actively sought the input of appropriate security experts in assessments of its current and future installations.
For instance, the issue of security was addressed in the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report for the replacement research reactor, publicly available since June this year, a report which an international peer review team deemed as an "acceptable basis for considering the licensing of the replacement research reactor".
Yours faithfully
