Today we passed an important milestone, with the successful installation of CG2's new shutter.
Over the last two weeks, the old shutter and in-pile plug were successfully removed and put into storage, and the new in-pile plug-guide assembly and shutter successfully installed.
This new shutter-guide arrangement will continue to feed CG1 (which serves QUOKKA and PELICAN), and CG3 (which feeds PLATYPUS, EMU and KOOKABURRA), in addition to the new CG2 guide which will feed our new state-of-the-art BILBY time-of-flight SANS instrument, along with opening up a second high-performance guide for other future instruments.
A modest amount of further work remains, during the long OPAL shutdown, to check the shutter's operation, install some static optical components and windows, and seal everything up. OPAL is expected to be back in normal operations by 17th December.
Congratulations to the whole project team (led by Andrew Eltobaji) and all its members who have contributed to this success!
