Medals awarded to nuclear waste forms researcher and the late Professor George Collins

The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) has awarded a Gold Medal for excellence in research to Dr Emily Reynolds (University of Sydney) and posthumously to the late Professor George Collins.

The Gold Medal acknowledges researchers who have been supported by AINSE. It may be awarded jointly to collaborating researchers. One of the medals is reserved for graduate students, including those who have recently completed their PhD projects.

"This year was particularly special because we awarded two medals," said Michelle Durant, AINSE Managing Director.

The first medal awarded was to Dr Emily Reynolds of The University of Sydney (below right), who synthesises materials relevant to nuclear waste forms.

She joined the Goodwin Group as an early-career Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford in December 2015 after completing her PhD. Reynolds was unable to attend the ceremony. Dr Gordon Thorogood, Reynold's ANSTO co-supervisor and mentor accepted the award on her behalf.

"Professor Collins played a significant leadership and mentoring role for AINSE, " said Durant.
