ANSTO is a collaborating organisation in the Australia Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence in Future Low Energy Electronics Technologies, which has received $33.4 million in funding in an announcement by the ARC today.
The Centre, which will be administered and led by Prof Michael Fuhrer and Monash University, aims to develop the scientific foundation and intellectual property for new electronics technologies.
ANSTO’s participation is being led by senior researcher and Platypus instrument scientist, Prof Frank Klose.
Decreasing energy use is a major societal challenge, and the Centre aims to meet that challenge by realising fundamentally new types of electronic conduction without resistance in solid-state systems at room temperature.
Novel resistance-free electronic phenomena at room temperature are expected to form the basis of integrated electronics technology with ultra-low energy consumption.
Collaborators are confident that the Centre’s development of innovative electronics could put Australia at the forefront of the international electronics industry.
The latest round of the ARC Centres of Excellence scheme, announced today by Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham, will fund nine ARC Centres of Excellence in areas of national importance.
The scheme began in 2002 represents prestigious foci of expertise through which high-quality researchers maintain and develop Australia's international standing in research areas of national priority.
Centres are typically funded over a period of up to seven years, giving collaborators the flexibility to undertake comprehensive research programs that tackle Australia’s big challenges, as well as short-term projects that answer emerging issues or questions.
Promoting a high level of national and international collaboration, each centre collaborates with partners from the university sector and other organisations around the globe, facilitating international knowledge transfer that greatly enhances their research outcomes.
