Collaborative research between ANSTO and the University of Cambridge is featured on the frontispiece of this week's edition of Advanced Energy MaterialsJacqueline M. Cole and co-workers report the use of molecular engineering to design a new class of dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs).

Structure-function relationships, existing between the dye/TiO2 interface (working electrode) and photovoltaic properties of a DSC, provide the design information needed to re-engineer one type of functional (laser) dye into another (DSC) functional form. New dyes are built from molecular fragments, like a jigsaw puzzle.
