Top science students join AINSE's 2002 Winter school

The elite of Australia and New Zealands science students will join the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) for 5 days of learning and experiments at the annual AINSE Winter School on Saturday 6 July.

AINSE, in conjunction with ANSTO, offers the chance for one senior undergraduate student from most universities around the country to participate in the 5-day school.

Students who attend the Winter School are considered as being the top in their chosen field and come from a range of tertiary disciplines, including chemistry, engineering, environmental science, geology and physics. The theme of the Winter School is "Nuclear techniques applied to natural processes". During the week, students attend several lecture and experimental sessions across the following topics:

  • Neutron diffraction
  • Ion beam analysis
  • Use of natural radioactivity in environmental studies
  • Radiation chemistry
  • Environmental radioactivity and the living world

The aim of the Winter School is to give top science students the opportunity to learn hands-on applications of their studies whilst gaining an insider's view of the work that ANSTO does.
