Eureka Prizes 2014

The Australian Museum’s famous Eureka Prizes were established in 1990 to honour the outstanding achievements in the field of science.

The Eureka Prizes are awarded annually to recognise excellence in areas such as research and innovation, leadership, school science and science communication.

ANSTO has sponsored the Eureka Prize for 'Innovative use of Technology' for the last three years and will continue its support of the prize this year. 2014 Nominations are now open for all Eureka Prize categories.

In 2011, the first year that ANSTO became one of the sponsors of the Eureka Prizes, Dr Phil Dinning and Professor John Arkwright won the ANSTO prize with their innovative catheter, which is a tool used in diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders.

Last year the winners of the ANSTO Eureka Prize were the ‘Zebedee Team’ led by Dr Elliot Duff from the CSIRO. The Zebedee team successfully developed their idea of using a spring-mounted hand-held laser scanner to make 3D maps of terrain that is currently impossible to map using GPS. Dr Duff recently joined ANSTO to talk about Zebedee as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series.

Previous winners include the Department of Chemical Engineering at Monash University, led by Associate Professor Wei Shen, who won the ANSTO prize in 2012 with their blood test innovation that spells out blood types in written text on paper for interpretation by non-professionals.

The ‘ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology' is awarded to individuals or groups who have used new or existing technology in an innovative way to improve the outcome of their research. Learn more about this prize.

The ANSTO prize is one of 15 Eureka Prizes up for grabs, that rewards achievements in scientific research, outstanding early career research, science photography, environmental science and mentoring  young researchers, to name a few.
