The ANSTO 2015 Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology has been awarded to a team from the University of South Australia at a ceremony last night in Sydney for their work in developing an energy storage system that is a tenth the cost of batteries.
ANSTO extends congratulations to the team who earned this prestigious national science prize and acknowledges the accomplishments of the other finalists.
Associate Professor Frank Bruno (pictured centre), Dr Martin Belusko (pictured right) and Dr Steven Tay (pictured left) have combined a number of innovations to provide an inexpensive method of storing electricity and meeting demand more efficiently.
The researchers developed a phase change system using liquid salts that can be melted or solidified in response to energy demand.
The other finalists in this category included Associate Professor Kondo-FranÒ«ois Aguey-Zinsou from the University of NSW for his work on hydrogen storage and Professor Martin Green and Dr Mark Keevers, also from the University of NSW, for their investigations of solar energy technology.
