ANSTO welcomes the Minister’s announcement that Mr James McDowell will be the new Chairman of the ANSTO Board and Dr Erica Smyth will be the Deputy Chair and Chair of the ANSTO Risk and Audit Committee.
Appointed to the ANSTO Board in December 2013, Mr McDowell has 35 years’ experience working for multinational defence, security and aerospace companies.
He is a keen supporter of higher education and has strong connections with the university sector. He holds a law degree with honours from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom and holds strong skills in manufacturing, business management, economics, industry, innovation and government relations.

Mr McDowell will take over from the achievements of Dr Paul Greenfield AO, who has successfully led the ANSTO Board since February 2011.
We also warmly welcome the appointment of Dr Erica Smyth to the role of Deputy Chair and Chair of the ANSTO Risk and Audit Committee. Dr Smyth was first appointed to the ANSTO Board in 2008 and brings to this new role strong corporate governance experience as a successful businesswoman with a wealth of experience in senior executive roles in the resources sector coupled with a deep understanding of ANSTO’s operations and a science background.
