Relay For Life a cancer-fighting success

The overnight community event Relay for Life was successfully held over the weekend with more than 2,000 passionate supporters converging on Sylvania Waters and braving the cold in the largest of the events held on Australia's East coast.

Driven by volunteers, the 24-hour relay event raises money for the Cancer Council NSW with the Sutherland Shire a key region in driving funding and on track to raising $600,000, and over $4 million in the 12 years it's been run in the area.

ANSTO was a proud sponsor of the event this year and also participated with three teams involved raising over $5,000.

ANSTO’s role in the development and production of potentially lifesaving nuclear medicine to detect a range of cancers and other diseases was the key driver for the organisation’s involvement.

ANSTO staff were keen to form teams and raise as much money as they could for Cancer Council NSW.

All teams reached their fundraising targets running cake stalls, raffles, BBQs and charity chocolate sales at their Lucas Heights campus in the Sutherland Shire.

As one ANSTO team member said “Participating in the Relay is a unique experience – especially on the track during the night you feel so much goodwill of people willing to fight against cancer and it is a great feeling to be part of this fight against cancer.”

A stall by ANSTO operated during the event and informed the participants about the nuclear science and technology work done by ANSTO benefiting all Australians – including  that every week, ANSTO’s OPAL reactor produces 10,000 doses of potentially lifesaving nuclear medicines which are then distributed to over 250 hospitals and medical practices right across Australia.
