The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science, Technology & Engineering (AINSE) and ANSTO have signed an MOU with the Embassy of France in Australia that will facilitate and enhance bilateral collaborative research in science and technology between Australia and France.

AINSE Managing Director Michelle Durant with Bertrand Pous, Head of Culture, Education, Science and Technology, Embassy of France in Australia . ANSTO CEO Adi Paterson also signed the agreement .

The agreement supports a first-class scholarship program, Scholarship AINSE—ANSTO—French Embassy (SAAFE) that will facilitate an exchange of PhD students studying in French or Australian research institutions on ANSTO’s priority research themes: human health, the environment and the nuclear fuel cycle.

Up to four merit-based PhD scholarships up to $15,000 will be awarded commencing in 2017.

A major portion of the Australian component must be carried out at ANSTO. The duration of the exchange can be between two and six months, depending on the requirements of the host team, the project and other constraints related to overseas training.

“We are absolutely delighted that ANSTO’s ongoing relationship with the French research community is continuing and broadening in its scope. There have been excellent contributions to life sciences research here and in France through previous scholarships and collaborations to build upon,” said Dr Marie Claude-Gregoire, Leader of Human Health research at ANSTO.

AINSE, an organisation that facilitates world-class research and education in nuclear science and technology in Australia through a broad organisation membership and a range of programs and services, will receive and review the SAAFE scholarships through specialist committees.

“There is synergy between our current activities and the new opportunities provided by the SAAFE scholarship, which will be of great interest to our members,” said Managing Director Michelle Durant.

“There is a strong tradition of excellence in scientific collaboration between Australia and France that we are heartened to see continued by this agreement. We recognise the importance of fostering the next generation of scientific researchers, ” said Anne Roualt, Scientific Attaché, Embassy of France.

Applications for the scholarship are available on the ANSTO and AINSE websites.
