This week the SPATZ neutron reflectometer (formerly the BioRef neutron reflectometer at HZB which was transferred to ANSTO in February 2017) reached another project milestone with the delivery of the concrete plinth on which the instrument will be assembled. Due to the difference in beam height between the CG2B guide at the OPAL Research Reactor and the NL3b guide at the BERII Reactor in Berlin, the SPATZ instrument needs to be raised by 400 mm. This plinth will raise SPATZ to the correct height was well as provide a stable platform to on which to assemble the instrument. The concrete plinth also has two pillars for mounting the SPATZ disc chopper system.
The plinth is 8 metres long and 1.3 metres wide with a mass of 13,400 kg. Therefore moving the plinth from the delivery area to the west side of the neutron guide hall was a delicate task, which was conducted safely and successfully.
Delivery of concrete plinths for the mounting CG2B guide is expected later this year.
