ANSTO and the Embassy of Italy in Canberra hosted “The Italian-Australian Dialogue on Hadron Therapy” in Canberra on 10 October.

The focus of the event was the benefits of Hadron Therapy techniques and the Italian experience in establishing a Hadron Therapy centre for patient treatment and research.

To facilitate further research collaboration in this area, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the end of the meeting between the Italian Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO) and ANSTO.

ANSTO’s CEO Dr Adi Paterson said  that, Hadron Therapy is one of the most promising new cancer treatment options and the Italian experience is highly valuable for Australia. He also described the background to the formation of the Australian Hadron Therapy Collaboration.

Associate Professor Michael Penniment from the Royal Adelaide Hospital outlined the strong need for Hadron Therapy applications and current treatment options in Australia.

The two Italian expert presenters were Professor Sandro Rossi, General Manager and Technical Director of CNAO, and Professor Roberto Orecchia, Scientific and Medical Director of CNAO.  ANSTO’s Prof Richard Banati chaired an open forum on the subject after the presentations and Dr Mark Reinhard specifically addressed the research opportunities arising from a possible proton and carbon research centre in Australia.

The event was attended by leading Australian cancer specialists and other member of the Australian Hadron Therapy Collaboration interested in the patient benefits and research opportunities. Thank you to Professor Oscar Moze, Scientific Attaché at the Embassy of Italy Canberra for hosting the event in the embassy.
