Key members of Argentina’s Federal parliament were proud of achievements by home company INVAP - designers of Australia’s nearly completed replacement research reactor, OPAL - when they visited the construction site at ANSTO yesterday.

Dr Ron Cameron, ANSTO Chief of Operations, said the visit was extremely beneficial in continuing to build solid relationships with Argentina.

“OPAL is a major scientific flagship project between Australia and Argentina,” explained Dr Cameron. “Visits such as these help to further strengthen business relationships and open doorways for future ventures.

“The delegation came to see OPAL’s progress and to meet the Argentine team whose skills and experience have made this a reality,” he said. “They were suitably impressed.

“We see this as the first of a number of projects which will be made possible through the cooperation agreement signed between the two countries, which was ratified by the Argentine parliament last December.

“This is the first time a group of Argentine parliamentarians have visited the OPAL site since the signing, so it was a significant day for the OPAL Australian-Argentine team,” Dr Cameron said.

The parliamentary delegation, which was invited by the Australian parliament and represented all parties, included: Senator Sonia Escudero (delegation leader) Representative Jorge Arguello (Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives), and Senator Luis Falco and Representative Fernando Chironi (MPs representatives from Rio Negro Province). Rio Negro is where INVAP is based.
