ANSTO has noted calls for details of all radiation-related events at its site to be made public. As the Minister for Education, Science and Training told Parliament on 15 June, such details are already public.
Under the terms of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act and Regulations and of the licences issued by ARPANSA, ANSTO is required to report such events to ARPANSA. If the event is significant – for example, the exposure of a worker beyond regulatory limits – the report must be provided within 24 hours. Other less significant events are reported to ARPANSA as part of routine quarterly reporting.
The CEO of ARPANSA reports to Parliament on a quarterly and on an annual basis.
