Google satellite photographs update

Some concerns were raised in the media today regarding satellite photographs of ANSTO’s nuclear facility in Sydney’s south.

ANSTO would like to confirm the following:

1. ANSTO and security agencies have been aware of the photographs for some time. ANSTO does not believe the pictures pose a security risk. Although buildings are clearly visible, critical infrastructure is not.

2. The photographs are over two years old. Aerial photographs of the site have been available to the public on a cost basis for some years, and Google Earth does not add to any of the existing publicly available data.

3. ANSTO security works closely with national security agencies such as ASIO to ensure the site is secure and meets national and international security standards for nuclear facilities.

4. Security at ANSTO is taken extremely seriously, and processes are continually assessed to ensure that national and international standards are met.
