For the record: Pacific Highway

There have been a number of recent media reports about a 1980 Pacific Highway truck accident being linked to illness amongst road and emergency services workers.

Some of these reports incorrectly said that some of the material on the truck had been sourced from Lucas Heights.

As ANSTO said in a recent statement, records indicate the material in question did not come from Lucas Heights, was not going to Lucas Heights, was not made at Lucas Heights and was not being transported in a Lucas Heights vehicle.

ANSTO was in contact with numerous media outlets to confirm this fact, and in particular would like to thank The Daily Telegraph for publishing a

clarification confirming that the material was not coming from ANSTO:

FOR THE RECORD - CLARIFICATION

THE Editorial “Our Nuclear fears demand inquiry” published yesterday said the 1980 truck crash on the Pacific Highway near Laurieton was “carrying radioactive waste sourced from Sydney’s Lucas Heights nuclear facility”. This is incorrect. The waste did not come from Lucas Heights.”

ANSTO has assisted NSW Government road and emergency services agencies with their investigations at the site.
