The highly respected Australian environmental scientist, Dr Ann Henderson-Sellers, has been appointed Director of the Environment Division of ANSTO.
She is enthusiastic about the opportunities for applying nuclear science and technology to significant environmental analysis, monitoring and enhancement, particularly in areas associated with transfers of pollutants in the environment, and climate change.
ANSTOs Environment Division is already held in high regard both within Australia and overseas.
This regard will be enhanced by Dr Henderson-Sellers international reputation, which is demonstrated by advisory appointments that include:
- In greenhouses gases: Deputy Chair of the National Greenhouse Advisory Committee 1993-97
- In climate modelling: Visiting Professor at the Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre and the USAs National Centre for Atmospheric Research
- In air quality: a member of the US industry delegation to the Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero in 1992.
She was chair of the Australian Academy of Sciences National Committee on Climate and Atmospheric Science for seven years and was a member of the Australian Science and Technology Council, which advises the Prime Minister.
In 1992, Dr Henderson-Sellers was one of the three members of the Research Reactor Review committee, known as the McKinnon Review, that reported to the then Federal Government on Australias future nuclear research requirements.
She is also currently Managing Director of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technologys RMIT Innovation Ltd, the commercial arm of the research and development enterprises at RMIT.
The Executive Director of ANSTO, Professor Helen Garnett, said that Dr Henderson-Sellers field of expertise, breadth of experience and her strong track record in transferring the benefits of research to the wider community, closely matched ANSTOs strategic plan.
"Our Environment Division, using its own resources and drawing upon the multitude of disciplines across ANSTO, is highly regarded internationally for its innovation, products and services, especially in mining and waste and pollution management," she said.
"ANSTO is confident that Dr Henderson-Sellers will enhance this regard and provide further insights into how all of ANSTOs capabilities can be best delivered for the benefit of Australians," she said.
Dr Henderson-Sellers will succeed Dr Wally Zuk, who headed the Environment Division from 1991.
Dr Zuk, who has led the Division during a period in which it has gained international recognition, will take up the position of ANSTOs liaison with government at Federal and State levels on relevant science issues
