New approach to intellectual property development

ANSTO’s new approach to intellectual property (IP) development – which focuses on market need first not the IP – will be outlined tomorrow, Thursday 19th February, at the Commercialising Intellectual Property Conference, Carlton Crest Hotel Sydney at 11:30am.

ANSTO’s Director of Business Development, Mr Rob Muir, will introduce ANSTO Business Lab – an approach that takes the evaluation, management and commercialisation of intellectual properties and technologies from cradle to grave.

"The way Business Lab works is unique as it takes a collaborative R&D approach where ANSTO can work its intellectual property in together with another party," said Mr Muir.

"This way we can share benefits in a product that is designed to meet market needs – for example the development of targeted radiopharmaceuticals to improve disease treatment.

"We need to be competitive and commercial to get ahead and at the moment internationally, Australia is more known for tourism, promoted by the likes of Paul Hogan and Steve Irwin, so business, particularly in the United States, often fails to see the smart side of Australia.

"At ANSTO we believe science is good business. Business Lab is based on fostering a better entrepreneurial climate within the organisation to help create new wealth, business and strategic opportunities and build a diversified technologically-based business portfolio.

"ANSTO’s goal is to significantly increase its IP revenues and we believe the Business Lab approach has the means to deliver the required results," said Mr Muir.

Mr Muir recently returned to Australia after 20 years working in the United States at the forefront of technology commercialisation and venture capital.
