ANSTO stated that claims made by Councillor Ken McDonell of Sutherland Shire Council in relation to an operational event which occurred some eight months ago are a total misrepresentation.
The event involved the handling of a very small (less than 1 centimetre) solid ceramic disc in a controlled laboratory environment.
Although the event was minor, ANSTO reported it promptly to the appropriate regulatory body, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA). ARPANSA has confirmed that the event had no health implications for any staff member.
