Registrations are now open for a Christmas holiday school science bonanza which will see up to 150 kids converge on Lucas Heights to learn how to turn the humble coke bottle into a rocket. Five rocket-making classes will be taught this January by scientists at Australia’s premiere science campus.
Up to 30 kids at a time are expected to attend each of the five rocket-making classes and be inspired by fun science.
“These workshops are a great, fun and very wet way to enjoy science and develop kid’s interest in some of the fundamental principles of engineering and physics,” said Rod Dowler, who runs ANSTO’s Discovery Centre.
“I guarantee that any child who participates will never look at a coke bottle the same way again.
“Importantly, what we are trying to do here is develop an interest in science in young people from our local community and beyond.
“Given that something like a third of our employees live locally – we like to think we’re giving an early science lesson to a local who someday will grow up to become a nuclear scientist.”
The lessons will be fully supervised by qualified scientists and ANSTO education officers, and parents are welcome to attend.
