One of Australia's top engineers to become one of its newest citizens

Australia Day 2014 will be a memorable one for ANSTO CEO Dr Adi Paterson who will become an Australian citizen on Sunday. Dr Paterson has lived in Australia since he became CEO of ANSTO in 2009. He was recognised by the Sydney Division of Engineers Australia as their 2012 Professional Engineer of the Year.

ANSTO operates some of Australia’s most significant science infrastructure, including our nuclear research reactor in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, and the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne.

This infrastructure is used by Australian and international researchers to better understand our environment, address health issues, produce medicine and deliver solutions for our industries.

Importantly, ANSTO is also one of the Sutherland Shire’s largest employers. Dr Paterson lives in ‘the Shire’ and will take the pledge of commitment alongside his wife, Cathy, at a ceremony in Sutherland Entertainment Centre, to be presided over by Mayor Steve Simpson.

“I have had the pleasure of living in this wonderful country for around five years, and I’m excited to take the pledge and become an Australian citizen. It’s an honour,” said Dr Paterson.

“Australia has given me the opportunity to lead ANSTO and, as in so many areas like sport, music and academia, Australia well and truly punches above its weight when it comes to producing high quality research outcomes.

“I am very proud to lead one of Australia’s best science organisations and, as of Sunday, I will also be a very proud Australian.”
