The list of known things that make up the world around us probably just grew longer, with the likely discovery of a brand new element.
Led by researchers at Germany’s GSI laboratory, the team of international scientists, including some from the ANU, have submitted a paper about the discovery of atoms of element 117. This matches the heaviest atoms ever observed, which are 40 per cent heavier than an atom of lead.

If the paper is officially accepted, we will need to update our table of elements. More information can be found here.
