Some concerns were raised in the media today regarding satellite photographs of ANSTO’s nuclear facility in Sydney’s south.
ANSTO would like to confirm the following:
- ANSTO and security agencies have been aware of the photographs for some time. ANSTO does not believe the pictures pose a security risk. Although buildings are clearly visible, critical infrastructure is not.
- The photographs are over two years old. Aerial photographs of the site have been available to the public on a cost basis for some years, and Google Earth does not add to any of the existing publicly available data.
- ANSTO security works closely with national security agencies such as ASIO to ensure the site is secure and meets national and international security standards for nuclear facilities.
- Security at ANSTO is taken extremely seriously, and processes are continually assessed to ensure that national and international standards are met.
