OPAL's new EMU back-scattering spectrometer has taken its first quantum rotational tunnelling spectra from samples of m-xylene and ammonium perchlorate. The spectra were subtracted for a flat background and agree with previous published studies in the literature. The instrument resolution agrees with the first spectrum from April 2015 and demonstrates the achievement of the design resolution of approximately 1.2 microeV FWHM.
Congratulations to the EMU team, and the many others who have contributed to achieving this important milestone. EMU is the 13th neutron beam instrument at the OPAL Reactor.
This achievement coincides with the 50th anniversary year of the neutron backscattering technique which was recently celebrated in Germany earlier this month.
