Today ANSTO officially announced that Dr George Collins, previous ANSTO Director of Materials and Engineering Science, is the new Chief of Research for Australia’s only dedicated nuclear science and technology research facility.
The new position is a senior executive role responsible for the leadership and oversight of ANSTO’s research and development activities.
ANSTO Executive Director, Dr Ian Smith, said Dr Collins’ extensive experience in the management of scientific projects and research outcomes was ideally suited to meet the challenges offered by the role.
"We are very pleased to appoint George as Chief of Research, and believe his experience will ensure that ANSTO meets its research objectives and will keep Australia at the cutting edge of international nuclear-based science.
“ANSTO’s research future is very exciting,” said Dr Smith. ”Soon the new OPAL research reactor and associated neutron beam facilities will be on-line, offering state-of-the-art research instruments for Australian and visiting international scientists. These facilities will support further scientific breakthroughs for Australia.”
Dr Collins started his career at ANSTO as a research scientist in 1986, working through the ranks to Principal Research Scientist.
In December 2001, he was appointed as Director of Materials and Engineering Science. Dr Collins has acted in the Chief of Research position since it was first established earlier this year.
