ANSTO leads Australia in welding technology

ANSTO’s material engineers have been recognised for their expertise and innovation in welding technology with a prestigious award from the Welding Technology Institute of Australia.

The Institute of Materials Engineering was named the WTIA 2010 Company of the Year for their work in the science and technology of welding and its contribution to Australia’s high international standing in this field.

IME is a major centre of materials engineering and expertise in Australia. It aims to develop, manufacture, characterise, model and - ultimately - utilise materials in support of the advanced nuclear fuel cycle and next genberation power generation.

The Institute has undertaken cutting edge research on the structural integrity of welds and welded structures for over 50 years and ANSTO has used this capability to ensure the safety of its nuclear plant including the OPAL reactor. The Institute also undertakes projects that support the Australian power generation, defence and resource industries and works collaboratively with international stakeholders to improve nuclear safety world-wide.

The award was presented at the WTIA Annual Awards Dinner on Wednesday 25 May held as a part of National Manufacturing Week in Melbourne.

Head of IME, Professor Lyndon Edwards said, “There has been a vibrant Materials division at ANSTO since the early days when it was called the Australian Atomic Energy Commission.”

“The division undertakes projects that support the Australian power generation and resource industries and in recent years has built a first-class weld modelling capability that supplies the fully validated residual stress simulations necessary for structural integrity assessment to support the OPAL reactor and international nuclear energy clients and stakeholders.

“It is especially pleasing to see the Institute’s capabilities and achievements in supporting both national and international industry being recognised by Australia’s key welding professional body, the WTIA, as they represent over 350 companies,” said Lyndon.

A good example of IME’s market success in the welding field is the RemLife program.
