Are you a young engineer looking to learn from senior engineers? Or, are you a senior engineer looking to see how other people approach similar problems that you face?
Don’t miss this valuable opportunity to hear from senior engineering professionals, to ask questions and network.
One of the key speakers at this year’s event, Dr Cory Hamelin, Structural Materials Engineer at ANSTO, says events such as this, organised by Engineers Australia, are vital for the ongoing engagement of aspiring and early-career engineers.
“By sharing our experiences in the context of interesting and often unique engineering challenges, we hope to provide valuable insight into how industry professionals successfully manage and deploy both small- and large-scale engineering projects,” says Dr Hamelin.
“This type of information is scarce for young engineers in or just out of academia, yet is extremely important if these engineers wish to apply their skills effectively in industry.”
ANSTO is very well suited to the presentation of captivating projects that inspire young engineers. Dr Hamelin’s own work focusses on numerical modelling of structural materials, and simulation of the processes applied to those materials.
“We possess many characterisation, testing and simulation capabilities that are unique in Australia,” he says, adding “a great example is the Kowari neutron strain scanner.”
Measurements performed using the Kowari instrument, complemented with sophisticated materials modelling and process simulation within the Institute of Materials Engineering, are frequently used to address engineering problems in the power, mining, transport and pipeline industries.
Get along to the event to hear more from the following key speakers:
Cory Hamelin, Structural Materials Engineer, ANSTO.
Cory has worked in the Structural Integrity Division at ANSTO for the past four years specialising in the numerical analysis of material performance for the purpose of component fitness-for-service. Projects undertaken during this time include research and development for EDF Energy in the UK, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the US, and the Defence Materials Technology Centre in Australia.
Rosemary Crowhurst, Engineering Manager, Shellharbour Council.
Rosemary Crowhurst is an Engineering Manager specialising in local government infrastructure maintenance and construction, with over 17 years’ experience working in civil construction and maintenance. She brings her skills to the management of a team of over 60 men and women maintaining the civil, buildings and plant assets of Shellharbour City Council. Her areas of responsibility include Council's road network, drainage system, 100 plus buildings, 100 plus plant and vehicles, 2 cemeteries and the Illawarra Regional Airport. The most rewarding and hardest part of her job is the management of the people involved in that process including crews, infrastructure planners, politicians and residents. Rosemary has also worked for Wollongong City Council, Sydney Water and a private construction firm.
Ben Lake, Senior Mechanical Engineer, Hatch.
Ben is a Senior Mechanical Engineer with Hatch and currently leads a mechanical analysis team in the Wollongong office. He started a cadetship with BHP Steel in 1995; attending Wollongong University part-time and working in various departments within the Port Kembla steelworks. Upon graduation he had brief foray in the academic world carrying out research on railway bridge dynamics. Since then he has worked in engineering consulting in both small and large firms within Wollongong. He has expertise in design, analysis and assessment of mechanical equipment for heavy industry.
More speakers to be announced soon.
