Last week we bade au revoir to Gail Iles, who this week takes up a position as lecturer in Physics at RMIT University.
Gail joined ANSTO in late 2014 as an instrument scientist on our new back-scattering inelastic spectrometer, EMU, where she played a key role on the instrument team in bringing the instrument through the hot-commissioning phase, and into the user programme. Gail was also an instrument scientist on our time-of-flight spectrometer, PELICAN, where she has supported external scientific collaborators.
Gail has been a well-respected staff member at ANSTO, especially for her numerous scientific and public outreach endeavours, including encouraging young women to consider careers in science, and for her fervent support of gender diversity in general. Gail has been a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Nuclear Physics at Australian National University since 2016 and was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, the latter a reflection of her varied career, which included working for the European Space Agency as a researcher, then as an Astronaut Instructor.
Gail's expertise and enthusiasm will be missed at ACNS, but we look forward to her returning frequently as a Super User of the ACNS neutron-scattering facilities.
