Tomorrow, the Northern Land Council (NLC) executive council members will visit ANSTO for an information gathering visit to help them gain a deeper understanding about its work. This in turn will aid the NLC’s assessment of the radioactive waste facility site situation in the Northern Territory.
The NLC have taken a proactive stance in relation to choosing a suitable site for the facility and in October 2005 called for an amendment to the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Bill 2005 to allow a Land Council to nominate an alternative site in the Northern Territory.
This amendment was duly passed and the NLC are currently considering their position. Media is invited to meet with the NLC visitors following their tour and ask questions about their experience and their current position. An ANSTO spokesperson will also be available to field any questions if required.
