Major publishing award won

Professor John Dodson and co-authors, were recently awarded the Australian Award for Excellence in Education and Publishing for the book The Australian Physical Environment, Oxford University Press.

Professor Dodson said he was delighted by the honour.

“It feels very satisfying when a book you helped write gets this type of award but it will be even more satisfying to know your work will play a role in helping educate people about our physical environment,” he said.

“The book aims to introduce tertiary level students to three main aspects of the physical environment – atmosphere, biosphere and lithosphere. Although the book focuses on Australia, international and national comparative examples are used to place its unique environmental position within a global context,” Professor Dodson said.

Professor Dodson contributed the chapters on the biosphere and the final chapter “Looking to the Future”, within a 16 chapter book. The authors also designed sample powerpoint slides for lecturers and sample exam questions (and answers). The latter are available for lecturers through the Oxford University Press website.

“It took 24 months to write but having been a lecturer myself and having a passion for teaching it was well worth it,” he concluded.

The awards were granted last week and are sponsored by Ligare Book Printers and the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL).
